Scattered Crumbs

by
Kevin PILKINGTON

You stop in a café and order
a coffee from a woman a little
bigger than the scones on sale
next to the muffins with icing
the color of snow piled so high
they could close a school. You take
the empty table near the window
with a half empty cup of cocoa
and scattered crumbs looking
the way Santa might leave it
after a snack on Christmas Eve.

You look out, take a sip then sit
still in order to watch the city move.
A bus rattles like dentures in the cold
on its way cross town; a flock
of pigeons near the curb walk on feet
shaped like pitch forks, their heads
moving back and forth-pistons
to an engine even a mechanic could never
fix. A young boy passing them holds
on to his mother's hand and onto
a string tied to a balloon. When it breaks
free he watches it until it is as high
as Chet Baker's voice and begins to cry.
An old woman crossing the street
alone gets angry, begins to yell,
makes a few important points and
by the time she reaches the opposite
corner, wins the argument and smiles.
It's impressive, you think, how quickly
she settled things.

On a whim you get up and head
into the church next door. You could
have sworn it was Catholic
but the saints near the altar look
Lutheran in the shadows and the rest
aren't even Christian, they're marble.
You find candles flickering near the last
pew, place money in the donation
box then find one that doesn't burn
on both ends, light it and pray it doesn't
burn the bottom of an angel's foot
on the wall a few inches above it.

After you get home you start
washing the dishes, then reach for
the towel that looks like the small
Yorkie a woman down the block
walks everyday. When it begins
to growl as you dry the first glass,
you decide to finish later, turn off
the faucet, put on your coat, then
pick up the towel again and take
it out for a long walk.
