We are proud to present an evening with Arif MARDIN, among
the top music producers of the 20th century and beyond.
Most of you, as music lovers have heard Arif MARDIN's
name and listened to his music which he has produced for
over 40 years.
Via
this unique evening, we aim to know Mr. Mardin, not only
by taking a closer look at his outstanding international
success in music, but also to get familiar with the inspirations
and the leading forces behind his achievements, as well
as the other interests and lesser known areas in his daily
life. Mr. Mardin will share with us his experiences
in terms of how one feels when a dream has been accomplished!
"Jazz is my first love. My mother bought me a Duke
Ellington record w hen I was 10 years old," says
Mr. Mardin in his 43rd Academy's Trustee's Award acceptance
speech.
How did Mr. Mardin's music journey
begin?
Despite being a jazz fanatic and an accomplished orchestrator
and arranger, Mr. Mardin went to study at the London
School of Economics and never intended to pursue a career
in music. However, a 1956 meeting with jazz great Dizzy
Gillespie and young arranger Quincy Jones proved to be
a stroke of fate. This led to his being the first
recipient of the Quincy Jones Scholarship at the Berklee
College of Music in Boston. "In 1958, when Latife
and I had been married and living in Istanbul for
a year, a scholarship opportunity knocked on my
door through Quincy Jones. When I made a decision to take
it, and to go to Berklee College of Music in Boston, my
father thought I was about to fl y for Mars. He couldn't
understand it. He may have been right. Mine was
a dream but I had to pursue it."
Mr. Mardin is definitely living proof that one can
achieve success by believing in what one does and working
diligently.
Please join us to share Mr. MARDIN's extraordinary journey
in the music world as well as to be inspired by him..
