Hi. I'm thankful to Ms.Bircan Unver for giving me a voice of this meeting. I’m in my 4^th year of incarceration including the 1 yr. of house arrest.

What has been done in these years? A handful "support group" member took the following actions to raise funds: a book called *Electronically Shackled Woman: F.G. was written in 1999 and sold, numerous newspaper articles written, TV programs made in Turkey, web sites, internet sites, thousand of letters to individual programs like the one you’re attending now.

 End results; 3 Thrust Fund Accounts (1 in Turkey, 1 in America, the latest being ZAMAN Newspaper's Campaign Account and still campaigning because the goal for $85000- is not accomplish pleading and stating the validity of -----------

After two years, we’re still at the ground level. After two years, we’re still fighting at individual levels, getting tired. After two years, we still haven’t accomplished the $85000 goal. What kind of a picture does this point for us, for me as a member of this society?

Before all this happened, I was wearing the same ---- you’re wearing now. “Ah, Ah, Vah, Vah … my sympathy “no action…no result”

We’re in America… Our methods don’t hold water here. I want to prove my innocence. That I need your fired up spirit and financial support. I need the power of unity for the cause.

Columbus writes Arthur Miller’s Crucible... Are we all going to accept such injustice thinking it doesn’t apply to me? Thinking I’ll never be in trouble? I was exactly where you are now before all this happened to me. I’m not putting up this fight for me, only I’m putting it up for my children and your children. I don’t want my children to be a target for discrimination. I don’t want myself and my children to be added to the negative campaign images of “Midnight Express”. “ Barbaric Nations” due to the images of Armenian Massacre and Middle Eastern religious wars. Most of all, tomorrow, when you’re in my shoes, what would you like me to do? Let this be our learning and growing experience. We need to start somewhere. Why not start with one of us.

I would like to see this $85000 campaign to be a success. It can only happen with your participation. The $85000 is not only in money but an action will make a statement to the world. Thank you for coming and giving me a chance to address you all.

ANADOLU AJANSI'nin PANEL'LE ILGILI BASINA GECTIGI HABER:

  PRANGALI KADIN IÇIN AF ÇAGRISI

            NEW YORK (A.A) - Ender Ulgen - Kamuoyunda ‘’elektronik prangalı kadın’’ olarak bilinen Fügen Gülertekin’in affedilerek serbest bırakılması için Ohio valisi Robert Taft’a yönelik bir mektup kampanyası başlatıldı. Girişim, gazeteci Bircan Ünver, Türk Amerikan Dernekleri Federasyonu (TADF) ve Amerika Türk Kadınlar Birliği’nin ortak çabasıyla gerçekleşti.

            1997 yılında Amerika’nin Ohio eyaleti Columbus kentinde bebek bakıcılığı yaparken, Patrick Lape adlı sakat bir bebeğin boğazına kaçan mamasını çıkarmak amaciyle çaba harcayan ve çocuğu boğulmaktan  kurtaran Gülertekin, kurtarma sırasında çocuğu sarsarak zarar verdiği iddiasıyla 8 yıl hapis ve Ohio tarihinde rekor olan 10 milyon dolar tazminat ödemeye mahkum edilmişti. Gülertekin 1998 yılından bu yana cezaevinde bulunuyor.

            -Elçilik devreye girdi-

            Amerikan hukuk çevrelerince de ‘’haksız,  kasıtlı ve fiile kıyasla orantısız derecede ağır’’ olarak nitelendirilen karara karşı  başlatılan girişim çerçevesinde Türkiye’nin Washington büyükelçisi Baki İlkin, Ohio valisine mektup yazarak af yetkisini kullanmasını istedi. ABD dışişleri bakanlığı nezdinde de girişimde bulunan İlkin,  Amerikalı işadamlarına da mektup göndererek Gülertekin’in  durumunu dikkatlerine getirdi.

            Türkiye’nin Chicago başkonsolosu Yavuz Aktaş da konuyla ilgili olarak yaptığı yazılı açıklamada, ‘’Gülertekin’in hürriyetine kavuşabilmesi için erken serbest bırakılma veya af gibi imkanlardan yararlandırılması olanaklarının arandığını’’ kaydetti. Af için Gülertekin’in Amerikan makamlarına başvurması gerektiği ve ‘’prangalı kadının’’ yakında bu hakkını kullanmayı düşündüğü bildiriliyor.

            Öte yandan kamuoyunun konuya olan dikkatini tazelemek amaciyle New York’taki Türkevinde düzenlenen toplantıya katılan Türkler, Gülertekin’in serbest bırakılması için hazırlanan dilekçeye topluca imza koydular. İmzalanan dilekçeler  önümüzdeki günlerde Ohio valisi Taft’a iletilecek.
