MANUSCRIPT

By Ipek Aksugur DUBEN

the skin on my body
touches stones and pebbles
pressing against myself
my soul my body
I draw back
into that skin
to see myself again
one more time one more time
what is real
it or me
my self multiplies
as I look outside
and inside
deep deep
beneath the mountains of memory
where no language lies
I find all
that surrounds me
what is real
I or it
Or both or nothing
If time is a lull
And all is in motion
The moment draws on
Am I here am I there
Or is it
All-the-same

The progression of the idea of identity and segregation from the concept of the too obvious "veil" to the more essential violation of private and internal space has been the central issue in my work since 1992 beginning with MANUSCRIPT 1994.

MANUSCRIPT 1994 evolved from my reaction and response to the domestic space relegated to women and the moral pressures of 'bicab' which are covertly or overly imposed on them in Islamic Turkey, where I was born and raised. Both of these parameters rigidly drawn for the female race obviously bring forth
the issues of Islamic morality. They deny women their ability to choose and define for themselves their private sphere in which to act out their own sense of honor and shame.
