As the dangers of climate change
increasingly becomes the hot topic
of the day, citizens need to know
what they can do about escalating
dangers to the environment. For
this reason, representatives of
public interest groups from around
the world will gather at the United
Nations this September to address
the topic at an upcoming conference
entitled Climate Change:
How It Impacts Us All. Organized
by the United Nations Department
of Public Information (DPI) in
partnership with Non-Governmental
Organizations (NGOs), the Conference
is the premier NGO event held
at the United Nations each year.
In conjunction with this conference,
a series of television profiles
will air under the Light Millennium
TV Series on Queens Public Television
with key figures from the UN staff
and local members of non-governmental
organizations (NGOs) working with
the UN, discussing how climate
change affects every individual
and what citizens can do about
the problem. The series is titled
LMTV/UN-NGO Profiles.
The first of this seasons
series of LMTV interviews features
chairperson of the conference
Richard Jordan and 25-year veteran
of UN service Juan Carlos Brandt,
chief of the Department of Public
Information/NGO section.
Small steps that people can take
to make a big differenced are
pointed out on the program by
Brandt. The former spokesperson
for United Nations Secretary-Generals
recommends that adults can serve
as models for children in actions
like use of the right light bulbs,
walking rather than driving cars,
and reduced use of water. We
need to make sure that our children
and childrens children can
see glaciers, butterflies and
animals in natural settings,
says Brandt. In order to
do that, everyone has to make
changes in their daily life to
preserve the environment.
Brandt describes his philosophy
of life in the program: If
you think of life as a process
of always adding and always giving,
never subtracting, you realize
that you have done the most important
thing, you have made a difference.
Conference chair Jordan, a UN
NGO representative for the International
Council for Caring Communities,
adds that viewers can get active
by joining a local non-governmental
organization to impact others
in the community. In the program,
Jordan describes his philosophy
of life as based on the metaphor
of a European soccer field with
the beauty of an always-moving
ball: Move the ball forward;
the UN is about always moving
agenda forward and making an impact
in peoples lives.
The 60th Annual NGO/DPI Conference
on climate change will be held
at the United Nations Headquarters
in New York City on September
5-7, 2007.
The UN-NGO Profiles series was
launched by the Light Millennium
TV Series at Queens Public TV
in July 2006 with the aim to disseminate
information about United Nations
activities to local communities,
to create a bridge between viewers
of Queens Public TV and crucial
issues, as well as to profile
leading representatives of NGOs.
The intention is to lead to more
awareness and partnerships between
UN associated and non-associated
organizations and the private
sector. The Light Millennium organization
associated with the Department
of Public Information of the United
Nations effective on December
12, 2005.
The host of the LMTV/UNNGO
Profiles, Dr. Judy Kuriansky
is a clinical psychologist at
Columbia University Teachers College,
and a representative to United
Nations for two international
NGOs: the International Association
of Applied Psychology and the
World Council of Psychotherapy.
The program is produced and edited
by Bircan Ünver for
