In 1989 a multinational company started to do research on goldreseves in the surroundings of Bergama (ancient name Pergamon) 100 kim north of Izmir. Those companies have obtained until now about 600 licences only in Turkey for processing gold with the cyanide leaching system. Compared to the world wide granted licences for goldmines which is about 1000 this seems to be a big number for only one country. Knowing also the incredible agricultural and natural richness of some of the planned sites it means major changes for the ecological system in Turkey. Since 1989 the people of 17 villages close to Bergama are peacefully against this huge corporations.

This documentary tells the story of the people who fight against big corporations which take the right to destroy the land people are living of. It tells also what goldmining with cyanide leaching means. (The company representatives refused to talk in front of the camera.)

Eventhough the Turkish jurdication has prohibited goldmining in Bergama the company is still there.

About the directors:

Petra Holzer, studied Media and Communication Sciences and Theater Sciences at the University of Vienna. Writing currently her MA-thesis on the resistance movement in Bergama. Has worked in different documentary and video works. She also works as an researcher at the Bilgi University in Istanbul, Turkey.

Ethem Ozguven, studied Film and Television at the Anadadolu University, Eskisehir and completed his MFA at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Marmara University, Istanbul. He is the director of many award winning documentaries like Aziz Nesin, Kole and video art productions like oromi, ivme, etc.
