Together we have worked hard to improve...

Dear Friends,

One of our most recognized activities is our annual Turkish-American Day Parade and Turkish Culture Festival in New York City. This year our parade will take place on Saturday, May 19th in New York. Together we have worked hard to improve and enrich our parade by organizing a festival consisting of various cultural, social and artistic events.

Egemen BAGIS, president of FTAA; "A Poetry Breeze From The Shores Of Turkey"
event's opening remarks at the Turkish House in New York on May 2, 2001

It is a pleasure to share my views with the readers of Light Millennium. The great mind behind this interesting and valuable magazine, my good friend Bircan, is one of the most determined members of our community. Her commitment to freedom of expression had helped this media outlet to reach a dimension and esteem.

The organization that I preside over, Federation of Turkish American Associations, is an umbrella organization of 44 various non-profit Turkish American Associations in the United States. We have been inspired by the support and the faith our community has vested in us since 1956. We have three major goals in the organization of our events and they are the following:

1)to increase community solidarity by bringing Turkish Americans together;

2) to promote our beautiful homeland, Turkey, as well as its glorious heritage;

3)and to point up the strength and unity of Turkish-Americans to the world.

Among them is an event titled "A Poetry Breeze From The Shores Of Turkey" which is also organized by the publisher of this beautiful magazine, Ms. Bircan Ünver. Other activities include exhibitions, seminars, conferences, plays, concerts, dinners, panel discussions, etc. The schedule of the festival is listed below for your pleasure

In order to achieve these goals, we need your help and continued support so that we can continue our efforts to be "The Voice of Turkey and the Turkish-American Community". Also, please try to attend many of our activities, which have been well planned and possess strong appeal to you and your families. Remember, most of the events are also open to the public with no admission fees or with very reasonable fees.

But most importantly, join our parade on May 19th when we come together to celebrate our folkdance ensembles, bands, performers and talented artists of various kinds. Join us as we proudly wave our flags, display our national costumes and strike up the bands as we commemorate our 20th Annual Turkish Culture Festival. Let us share our culture and joy with our fellow New Yorkers and visitors of this cultural capital of the world. Let us increase last year's participation of 40.000, and dedicate this one-day of the year to promote our Turkish Heritage from generation to generation.

I would like to thank Bircan and Light Millennium once again for giving me the opportunity share my views with you.

"United We Stand - Birlikten Kuvvet Dogar!"

Egemen BAGIS

President, FTAA
