EWI: Statesmen of the Year
Foreign Minister of Turkey, Ismail Cem, and Foreign Minister of Greece, George Papandreou, received the EastWest Institute's "Statesmen of the Year" award on May 2, 2000 in New York City. The award was presented annually to recognize individuals who demonstrated true leadership and statesmanship in the quest to build a united and peaceful Europe.
Academy Award winner actress Olympia Dukakis, whose father was born in Turkey and whose mother was born in Greece, was the Master of Ceremonies.
The television program covers some highlights of the conference; "The New Geopolitics of Southeastern Europe: Building a Secure Investment Climate for the 21st Century", and from the "Statesmen of the Year" awards ceremony.
Extracts are from the statements of Former US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, Foreign Minister Ismail Cem of Turkey, Foreign Minister George Papandreou of Greece, EU High Representative for Common Foreign Security Policy Javier Solana, Former President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari, and Olympia Dukakis.
In general, many scenes intercut to "peace" quotations accompanying images of the "TIED-GUN" sculpture in order to create a subtext.
