We
must grow spiritually...
by Etienne MARTINEZ
The achievement of permanent and sustainable
world peace throughout history has been
impossible, because in order for peace
to exist we must all have to be at peace
with ourselves.
* There can be no world peace until
there is peace between countries.
* There can be no piece between countries until
there is peace between states, provinces,
regions and tribes.
* There can be no peace between states,
provinces, regions and tribes until there
is peace between people.
* There can be no peace between people
until there is peace within themselves.
People do not naturally incline towards
peace because peace requires submission,
in other words one must be able to give
up his/her immediate desires in order
to maintain the peace.
This requires submition to higher authorities
who have peace in mind in order to uphold
it. When we were children, it was our
parent's job to make sure that we kept
the peace. As we get older and become
contributors to society, it is our government's
job to ensure that we maintain the peace.
But these higher authorities are still
only human who struggle with issues of
peace themselves so they are not perfect
keepers of peace.
This does not mean that we should not
aim for empowering virtuous authorities;
in fact one of the greatest deferrers
of peace occurs when we strip away the
powers of those who serve as leaders such
as parents, teachers, older people, and
elected government officials to implement
justice; of course that is assuming that
they all have our best interest at heart.
As long as people try to achieve world
peace, we will never achieve it, but if
we focus on submitting ourselves to the
understanding of right and wrong and just
and ethical values, we could get closer
to achieving it. Before we can entertain
the idea of creating a better world, we
need to focus on creating better people.
We have falsely come to believe that we
can create world peace because we are
inherently good people who have control
over right and wrong; these assumptions
are false and are keeping us away from
peace.
In order to fix a problem, it must first
be acknowledged and addressed. The truth
is that we are not inherently good, we
are sinful by nature and we have no power
over changing the universality of right
and wrong. Because we are not good by
nature, we need to recognize and submit
to authorities that have our best interests
at heart and we must grow spiritually
so that we can have peace within our selves.
In order for world organizations to be
more successful in promoting peace they
will have to submit to the principles
of right and wrong. The day that we all
submit to the standard of right and wrong
and respect our authorities who enforce
it, we will be in a better position to
have peace within ourselves and ultimately
to have the greatest chance for world
peace.
