just want to scream 'wake-up people'
do something..."

I am writing to say thank you for being part of the Light Millennium
for the
Fall'05 issue and to get a chance
to write about the very important issues
of the U.N. World Summit.
The United Nations 58th Department of Public
Information (DPI)/Non Governmental Organizations
(NGO) Conference on September 7-9 agenda
was based on an achievable set of proposals
outlined in March by Secretary-General
Kofi Annan in his report "In
larger freedom". It focused on preventing fear and promoting security through
human rights education, and efforts
to achieve various Millennium Development
Goals by NGOs, media and other stakeholders.
The World Summit began on September 14 at the United Nations Headquarters
in New York, where more than 170 leaders
met to discuss how to help those most
in need around the world. The central
focus of the world leaders is implementing
the Millennium Development Goals(MDGs)
include :
1- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

2- Achieve universal primary education

3- Promote gender equality and empower women
bbc.co.uk
4-
Reduce child mortality
bbc.co.uk
5-
Improve maternal health
bbc.co.uk
6- Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
bbc.co.uk
7-
Ensure environmental sustainability
bbc.co.uk
8- Develop a Global Partnership for Development

Civil organizations
and campaigners
indeed have an important role to urge world leaders
to be more concerned
with cutting poverty, increasing
aid and reducing trade barriers and debt.
I am very happy that Mr.Kemal Dervis has
been assigned as Administrator of the
United Nations Development Programme .
I would like to take this opportunity
to congratulate him on his new mission.
As we all remember his great implementation
reforms pulled Turkey out of a deep financial
crises during his term as
Minister of Economic Affairs and
Treasury. I'm looking forward to seeing
Mr. Dervis promote development programs
and achieve the Millennium Goals and pull
those countries out of a crisis by 2015.
I would hope that UNDP receives the coordination
and support to reach the Millennium Development
Goals.
It's such a shame to see people, particularly children walking
barefoot for miles to find clean water and
food in this century where we highly depend
on technology.
Every year more than 10 million
children die from especially malaria
and other diseases. Just imagine more than
1 billion people face extreme poverty living
on less than one dollar a day, and more than 20,000 people die every
day from extreme poverty and other diseases.

Hopefully, after much debate, world leaders will consider continuing
for development goals. We want the heads
of State to recognize this and come to
some fundamental agreements about how
things will change the future.
I just want to scream "wake-up people" do something,
just one dollar can make a big difference
in the life of a starving child.
