Thank you Light Millennium, distinguished panelists and guests for being here and for sharing this important information.
In the UN Declaration and Programme of Action on Culture of Peace [A/RES/53/243], which was adopted by consensus on 13 September 1999 by the UN General Assembly, and is celebrating its 15th year anniversary next month:
Article 1 states: “A culture of peace is a set of values, attitudes, traditions and modes of behavior and ways of life based on: (a) Respect for life…(e) Efforts to meet the developmental and environmental needs of present and future generations;…(h) respect for and promotion of the right of everyone to freedom of expression, opinion and information.”*
And, as Bircan just said: “Access to information is the key”!
Article 3 states: “The fuller development of a culture of peace is integrally linked to: (j) Ensuring free flow of information at all levels and enhancing access thereto;”*
We need to remind our representatives how resolving these important food issues are imperative to the world we want and creating the culture of peace.
~I personally believe this UN Declaration and Programme of Action on Culture of Peace is one of the most significant of UN documents right behind the UN Charter, Universal Declaration on Human Rights, and Declaration of the Rights of the Child. If you would like to learn more about it, please come to the “UN High Level Forum on the Culture of Peace” convened by General Assembly President John Ashe on 9 September in this same room, the Trusteeship Council Chamber.
