A
Profile Of An Artist: Gonül AKIN
Gonul
Akin is one Turkey's musician-painters, a professional
singer who voluntarily retired from Ankara Radio, and
Turkish Radio and Television (TRT) in order to devote
all her energies to her beloved art. She had been a musician
for forty and a professional painter for the last thirty
nine years.
She started to paint during the same childhood years when
she first started to sing. Akin received early encouragement
from the Turkish Minister of National Education of the
time, Hasan Ali Yucel. As a result of such support, she
had her first painting exhibition while she was still
a child and received her first award.
1962
marks the year when Akin began to attend the most well-known
studios in Ankara in order to develop her art in new directions.
Having worked as student of many masters of Turkish fine
arts, Akin worked diligently to develop her own distinctive
style, especially after quitting music altogether and
concentrating on her paintings on a full-time basis.
Akin's first teacher was Nuzhet Islimyeli. She also worked
at the Turkish American Association (T.A.D.) studio of
Lutfu Gunay for a number of years. Later on, she became
a student of Esref Uren and Cihangir Vefa Ozturk. In 1986,
she attended watercolor and acrylic painting courses at
University of Maryland.
She
participated in many group exhibitions at home, Turkey,
as well as in Europe and the United States, in addition
to her many solo exhibits (see the list below).
Akin's
paintings have been exhibited at many Turkish State Fine
Arts exhibitions.
Four
of her paintings have been bought by Turkish Ministry
of Culture for the State Fine Arts Permanent Archive.
In
1988, two of her paintings have been accepted by a fine
arts jury to the Virginia Painting Exhibition in Manassas,
Virginia, with jury certification.
Akin
is a member of the Turkish Painters Association; United
States Fine Arts Association in Maryland; World Women
Painters Association (U.F.A.C.S.I.); and Washington D.C.
National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Spending
part of the year in the United States, Gonul Akin is getting
ready for the "Year 2003" exhibition that she
will open at Tranparan Gallery, in Ankara, Turkey.
