In
academic year 2001/02, there were 12,091 students from
Turkey studying in the United States (up 10.1 percent
from the previous year). Turkey is the eighth leading place of origin
for students in the United States, up from #9 the previous
year.
Academic Level. The
majority of the Turkish students study at the graduate
level. In 2001/02, their breakdown was as follows:

Historical trends.
Two years ago, Turkey
joined the list of top ten sending countries and has been
showing significant growth ever since.
Following last year’s 8.7% increase, the
number of students in the U.S. from Turkey increased by
10.1% in 2001/02.
This year, Turkey moved up a spot from ninth to
become the eighth-leading sending nation.
